A Roy Morgan Research poll has revealed children aged six to 13 in the region spent more than three hours less each week watching television in 2008 than they did in 2005.

Hours in front of the box dropped from 16.7 per week to 13.3, compared to the national decrease of one hour to 14.6 hours a week.

“While much has been made of the fact that children today are less active and more TV focussed than they used to be, research proves that this is not the case,” Roy Morgan industry communications director Norman Morris said.

Good For Kids Good For Life program manager Lucy Cogan said the results proved the Hunter children’s health program was making a difference in educating children to turn off the television.

“Kids shouldn’t be spending any more than two hours a day in a small screen situation, which includes television, internet and computer games. The more we reduce this the more time kids have to be active,” she said.

Bec Hewitt has headed to Adelaide’s Supreme Court to go toe-to-toe with women’s magazine New Idea after they published a story claiming she had a secret lover.

The story, which was printed in April this year, alleged that Bec was seeing a mystery man named as “Minder Mark”, a former fitness trainer from Texas.

New Idea claimed that Mark was “always by (Bec’s) side” and was “the kind of hunk every young mum dreams about”.

However, the magazine was left with egg on its face after it was revealed that “Minder Mark” was in fact Hewitt’s brother, Shaun Cartwright.

But even with the massive make-over, the shelter has failed to comply with Victoria’s animal practices code and proprietor Trish Burke claims she can’t afford to now bring her shelter up to strict industry standards, The Daily Telegraph reports.

She said the shelter had already attracted the attention of the Macedon Ranges Shire and the Department of Primary Industries following complaints by a disgruntled former employee.

“But I think being highlighted on the show last month just exacerbated everything and brought it to a head.”

The rising ten-year-old had finished seventh in the July Cup and was well beaten by winner Fleeting Spirit but on pulling up put his foot in a hole in the track. The horse has undergone surgery at the Newmarket Veterinary Hospital on his rear hind leg, with the nature of injury potentially life threatening.

Trainer Joe Janiak was distressed after the race with the horse which has launched him on an extraordinary global journey in considerable pain.

CanWest’s shares tanked 53 per cent in one day to close at C6.5¢, shaving its market value to just $C14.3 million ($A15.8 million) with massive numbers of shares being offloaded.

Network execs have given their reasons:

1. You can’t trademark a phrase that’s already on the spines of millions of books and DVDs.

2. Using said phrase is as good as branding the channel “Nerd World” and keeps the net from broadening its base — a song the net has been singing for years.

“First off, show me a network that doesn’t want to be bigger,” responds Syfy prexy Dave Howe. “We really do think that the name is a barrier to entry for some people. Rather than changing the programming to suit some new brand strategy, we’re changing the brand to fit the programming.”

The campaign itself is the brainchild of the network’s inhouse creative Michael Engleman, whose team coined the much-maligned name in a bid to widen the net’s reach.

“That came from me,” sighs Engleman, who promises he’s heard all the jokes. “We found the name through the design process, actually. We knew we wanted to lose the Saturn logo, we needed something that could be trademarked, and there was a warmth to the letter forms. The Y’s feel like they’re smiling at you.”
